in.dependent.state

in.dependent.state was made from field recordings I took on the prairie on July 4th of 2021. I was thinking about my friends in Myanmar and the ongoing situation there and the tenuousness of freedom. Freedom, as my friend Kyaw Kyaw would define it, is the possibility of self actualization without the constraint of oppressive forces. Of course, I can never think about these things from solely a human political space. My mind moves to philosophy and quantum physics… especially the work of Gilbert Simondon on the Process of Individuation and subsequently the more recent writings of Karen Barad, in which she defines any event or moment of individuation as a crystallization within the continuum of becoming. I feel there is often a tension between our human drives and what is happening on cellular or particle level.
The audio and visual elements of this composition are an attempt to convey this in some way.
